Re. www.cisco.com

Your Top Five Cisco Career Certification Questions Answered
By Cisco Roadshow Manager, Pat Ma

Q: What are certifications? Why should I get one?
A: A certification on your resume or business card lets the world know that you have practical knowledge in networking. If an employer looks at your resume and sees a CCNA® certification, for instance, that employer knows automatically that you know how to configure, operate, troubleshoot, and manage a Cisco® network.
Certifications will be good for your career because they will 1) distinguish your skills from other IT networking professionals, 2) help you find more networking jobs, and 3) help you make more money at those jobs.
When applying for jobs, you’ll find that some jobs will require you to have a certification, and most networking jobs will pay you more salary if you have a certification.

Q: How many different types of Cisco certifications are there?
A: There are many certifications available, so don’t be overwhelmed. The most popular certification path starts with a CCENT™ certification if you’re in high school or college, then going to a CCNA if you’re just beginning your career with 0-2 years of experience, a CCNP® if you have 2-5 years of experience, and a CCIE® if you have 5+ years of experience.
We have four levels of certifications (entry level, associate level, professional level, and expert level) that correspond to how many years of experience you have in your career.
We also have seven tracks (routing and switching, design, security, voice, wireless, service provider, and storage) that correspond to the concentration you want to pursue.
For instance, if you are just beginning your career and want to specialize in network security, you would get a CCENT certification, then CCNA, CCNA Wireless, CCSP®, then CCIE Security. As mentioned above, the most general and popular path is routing and switching (CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE Routing and Switching).

Q: Which certification should I get?
A: That depends on 1) how many years of experience you have in networking and 2) what area you want to specialize in. Our most popular certification path is routing and switching. For this path, if you’re in high school or college, get a CCENT. If you’re just beginning your career, get a CCNA. A CCNP comes in 2-5 years into your career. If you have 5+ years of experience, get a CCIE.
We also have a certification path for seven concentrations (routing and switching, design, security, voice, wireless, service provider, and storage). So determine how many years of experience you have, where you want to concentrate, and then go to the Cisco Learning Network to choose a certification for your level of experience and concentration.
Note that if you have 5+ years of networking experience and want a CCIE, you should take the associate and professional level certifications first as good practice for the CCIE.

Q: How do I get a certification?
A: To get a certification, you have to:
1) determine which certification to get
2) study for the certification exam
3) take the exam
4) pass the exam
Determine which certification to get. If you don’t have any certification at all, then get a CCENT if you are in high school or college, or a CCNA if you are a working professional. The CCNA certification is a good “jumping off” point and a prerequisite for most associate level and professional level certifications.
If you already have a CCENT or a CCNA, it’s time to figure out where you want to move your career. Do you want to be networking generalist (go to a CCNP, then CCIE), or do you want to concentrate on an area (security, voice, wireless, etc)? Go to the Certifications section of the Cisco Learning Network for your certification options at this point.
Study for the examination. You can take a class on Cisco networking, purchase a self-study guide, or both.
As far as classes are concerned, you can take a college class in Cisco networking through the Cisco Networking Academy®. To locate a class near you, visit: http://netacad.cisco.com.
Or, you might choose to take a quick Cisco networking training course through a Cisco Learning Partner. To find a training course near you, visit: www.cisco.com/web/learning.
Finally, you can pick up a study guide and study on your own. You can find study guides for the certification exam you are taking at your college or town bookstore, or you can order Cisco Press® study guides at: www.ciscopress.com.
Take the exam. You’ll have to sign up and take the exam at a Pearson VUE Testing Center. To find a testing center near you and make an appointment to take the test, visit: www.vue.com/cisco.

Pass the exam. After taking the exam and passing, you will be certified and can then list the certification on your resume.

Cisco Certification Success Story
Alexey Naydenov
Job Title and Responsibilities: Networking Officer at ICT’s Saipem Kazakhstan Branch
Certifications Held: Cisco® CCENT®
Up Next: Alexey will soon take the CCNA® exam and plans to obtain a CCVP® certification.
Quote: “My Cisco certification has opened so many doors in the IT field. It has given me the tools I need to explore a networking career, and I’m simply thrilled with the possibilities my future holds.”

Kazakhstan’s booming oil and gas industry is transforming the countryside. New oil prospects along the coast of the Caspian Sea have given momentum for development across the nation. Cities are invented from nothing as industrial centers begin construction, and a vast infrastructure is being laid down to bring connectivity to the region.

Taking advantage of the employment opportunities, Alexey Naydenov has just begun a career in the IT field. Alexey comes from a challenging economic background, and wasn’t able to pursue formal network training. Made possible by his self-determination and curiosity about networking and the Internet, he has launched a career as a Networking Officer for ITC Electronics’ branch in Saipem, Kazakhstan.

Alexey first considered obtaining his Cisco Certification after speaking with friends and colleagues in the IT field. Intrigued by the possibilities, he began to research the Internet and on Cisco’s website. After sifting through piles of references and study-guides, and after long hours of self-study, Alexey acquired his CCENT certification.

“Once I joined ICT Electronics, it became clear that I needed some kind of industry validation,” said Alexey. “I wanted to demonstrate my desire for self-improvement, and to develop a set of skills to distinguish my resume. Well, I decided to start with Cisco. I have absolutely no regrets, and I honestly had no idea how helpful the certification would be. It practically handed me a career.”

When asked about his present job, Alexey was happy to share details, “My principal duties are centered around the development of large LAN projects. With the current demand for oil and gas infrastructure, there is a lot of new construction going on in Khazakhstan. As these buildings go up, there is a strong need for networking expertise and installation oversight, so I help put new networks online. Where our networks are already in place, I monitor their workability and serviceability.”

As he has developed technical know-how, his company has placed increasing trust in his skills. Looking ahead, Alexey anticipates the completion of his CCNA and has plans to complete his CCVP soon after. As his responsibilities grow, he has hopes to move into the IT management field.

Alexey closed by commenting on his experience within the IT industry, “My Cisco certification has opened so many doors in the IT field. It has given me the tools I need to explore a networking career, and I’m simply thrilled with the possibilities my future holds.”

Women in IT Profile: Vimala Veerappan

Women in IT Profile: Vimala Veerappan
Re. www.cisco.com

Vimala Veerappan, a technical marketing engineer for Cisco Catalyst switches, became passionate about networking while still in college. Since graduating, she has continued her education and advanced her career through Cisco certifications, receiving the Cisco CCIE certification in 2007.

To you,IT certification exam expert really recommended the cisco exam below:

Cisco 646-230: Advanced Unified Communications AM, these are some exam study guides which you will cover every field and category in CSE helping to ready you for your successful Cisco Certification.
Cisco 350-020: CCIE SP Optical Qualification Exam, these are some exam study guides which you will cover every field and category in CCIE helping to ready you for your successful Cisco Certification.

Describe your current job and what a typical day is like for you.
I work on a team that allows me to take my technical knowledge and deliver that information to a variety of Cisco customers and internal groups. As a technical marketing engineer, my goal is to showcase the Cisco Catalyst 6500 and 4500 Series products in different business cases.

My job involves continuous learning. As the industry grows, so do the features and capabilities of our products. These new technologies are then implemented in the Cisco Catalyst 6500 and 4500 Series products to meet the requirements of businesses across the globe.

What education, preparation, and training brought you to this place in your career?
I have a degree in information sciences and technology from Pennsylvania State University, where I was introduced to networking through an internship at a large insurance company. I received my first full-time job at this company after college, and received the CCNA certification while I worked there.

After I came to work at Cisco, I knew I wanted to pursue a technical career path, and so the value of attaining additional certifications became clear. I received the CCNP certification a few years ago and last year I achieved the CCIE level.

What professional and personal experiences have led you to this phase of your career?
After my first professional job as a network engineer at the insurance company, I joined Cisco in 2004. This was a dream come true for me because I knew Cisco was a leader in the industry.

My first job at Cisco was in the LAN switching team in the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC), supporting all of the Cisco Catalyst hardware and software products. After a few years in that role, I joined the escalation team for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches, which is part of the product business unit. Currently, I am part of the Technical Marketing group for both the Cisco Catalyst 6500 and Catalyst 4500 teams.

Who have been role models for your career and what did you learn from them?
Specific role models in my career have always been those who have been successful in the networking industry. This includes people who have their CCIE certifications and also those who have in-depth technical knowledge and experience. These individuals are able to communicate technical information and share their expertise through their presentation skills. As a result, they gain the confidence of others as well as professional recognition and respect.

What has been your biggest professional contribution to date?
Passing my CCIE certification. While preparing for this exam, I was able to get a very in-depth knowledge of the protocols that were covered on the test. The topics on the CCIE exam are not only the most common protocols, but it covers a variety of areas, which allows you to have an end-to-end understanding of Cisco-based networks.
Now this knowledge helps me when I’m troubleshooting a customer problem because I better understand how the Cisco Catalyst switches interact with other technologies.

What do you hope to still discover, learn, or accomplish in your career?
In the networking field, one thing is always a constant: technologies and protocols are continuously changing. I want to continue growing in my technical field and become a well-rounded network engineer as new theories are challenged and innovative ideas are brought to the table.

What excites you about technology and networking and about working in this field?
Networking just makes sense to me. All of the pieces fit into a puzzle, and everything builds upon each other, which allows you to do more with the technology and that’s exciting. Also, the ability to work well with many different people and to establish effective relationships is just as important as continuing to expand my technical knowledge.

What are the opportunities that working in technology offers for women?
Don’t feel that you can’t pursue a technical career just because you are a woman. If you can show that you have strong technical knowledge and skills, you’ll get the respect of your male colleagues. In this field (as well as others), the true test of an individual is what you know and what you bring to the table. If you feel intimidated by entering a male-dominated field, join one of the many professional groups for women in IT, where you will find advice and support. Don’t let anything stop you from getting ahead in your career.

What advice would you give someone considering a similar career direction?
The fundamentals you learn while studying for a Cisco certification, along with the basics of TCP/IP, can take you anywhere, to different networking jobs in different companies. Reaching the CCIE level is a huge achievement that helps you stand out from others as you move through your career.

Are Cisco Certification A Must For IT Networing Career?
Re.jc-oh.blogspot.com

I had been working in an IT related field for almost four years now. But till now I’m still in the same position that I had a couple of years back. I had been planning to at least go up the corporate ladder but how should I do it? The industry is very competitive right now with all those certified professionals out in the market. So how can I improve and gain edge over those other people who have the same profession as me? My answer is Cisco certification.

How can being Cisco certified change my career? Being trained and certified gives you more knowledge and empowerment to be better than others who have not undergone the training and certification at all. Being certified means you are really competent to perform a specific task that a company requires. This gives you more edge over others and also gives a company that will hire you an assurance that you’ll be doing what they had expected you to do.

So where should you start? Be Cisco trained now in your chosen field, be it in IP Networking, Design, Security, Voice, Wireless, Routing and Switching. Gain that edge of being really competent in what you do and become certified for being good at it. You can start as Entry level and work your way up the different certifications, Associate, Professional, Expert and Specialist, that is.

My husband, he is now a CCNP holder (Cisco Certified Network Professional)and a CCNA holder (Cisco Certified Network Associate). It is not easy task to become Cisco certified professionals. It really requires lots of study, hands-on lab practices & understanding of the concepts. To excel, it is recommended to attend trainings if someone wishes to pursue on Cisco certification

However, he told me that he will continue to pursue the next level of Cisco certification which CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert). It is also the highest level of Cisco certification path. He told me that it not easy to get as he told me that it is the toughest assessments as compare with other IT assessments. Here, I really wish him success on pursuing CCIE and I’m sure he can make it. Because it is a world of Internet now where IT network infrastructure requires lots of qualified and certified IT professionals to design, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot the network related problems.
