Quote: “Networking is not only my profession, but also my passion.”
Now working as a senior networking engineer for Yahoo’s Core Network Group in Bangalore, India, Rajarshi Chakraborty’s curiosity about networking and IT protocols has led him on a decades-long path of self-determination and self-improvement. Coming from a challenging economic background, Rajarshi wasn’t able to pursue formal training in IT protocols, but found a way to satisfy his thirst for knowledge by combing through Cisco’s vast catalogue of technical documents and Cisco Press® books.
“I started loving Cisco because of the easy access to technical documents from the Cisco Websites, and that access helped me a lot as a beginner,” said Rajarshi. “Later, the certification hierarchy gave me a very clear growth path to follow, and I’ve been pursuing certifications now for 10 years.”
Starting off in a hardware maintenance position, Rajarshi’s first required Cisco training was on the Cisco 2500 Series Router. Building on those skills by acquiring another eight certifications, including the CCNP and CCDA certifications, Rajarshi has been very successful, eventually landing his present position in the Yahoo Core Network Group.
He estimates that he interacts daily with 50 other individuals who hold certifications from Cisco, and reports that “as far as my peers are concerned, we are all certified professionals, and our presence is valued at Yahoo.”
Asked about his present job, Rajarshi is happy to share details. “I mainly work as a liaison between the design and implementation teams, and I’ve supervised many of the major installations and improvements that the operations team has undertaken. The network here at Yahoo is immense, one of the biggest in the world, and I enjoy the challenges and the complexity of it, as well as the ability to meet critical business requirements in a timely manner.”
When not in the networking arena, Rajarshi can be found with his young daughter Rani or on the cricket pitch.
Looking forward, Rajarshi plans to complete his CCIE certification and envisions himself transitioning into a network architect role within Yahoo. “Being a technical person, networking is not only my profession, but my passion,” he says. “IT is such a rapidly evolving field, and it’s exciting to observe each generation of the technology as it unfolds.”
